Wears Valley lies in the majestic hills
of the beautiful Smoky Mountains. This
valley is one of the most beautiful
places you will find in the United
States. Close by are hiking trails,
mountain streams and waterfalls,
wildlife, whitewater rafting, tubing,
and other outdoor adventure provided
within the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park.
It is located between Pigeon Forge and
Townsend. From Pigeon Forge take U.S.
321 (turn at Ogle's Water Park onto
Wears Valley Road).
Wears Valley is home to one of America's
favorite artists, Lee Roberson. You'll
also find many exquisite craft shops;
horseback riding; helicopter tours over
the Smoky Mountains; homemade fudge, and
lots of real estate for sale. The
nation's largest concentration of
independent artists, artisans and
crafters are in the Smoky Mountain
region. You will find a variety of art
and crafts, including pottery, hand-made
brooms, candles, wood carvings and wood
works, fine art and sculptures, and
leather goods.
You may enter Great Smoky Mountains
National Park from Wears Valley. The
entrance is off Wears Valley Road about
9 miles south of Pigeon Forge on U.S.
321. Just a few miles from Wears Valley
is nature's open air museum, Cades Cove.

Cades Cove is a short drive from Wears Valley
Cades Cove is an open air museum that
preserves some of the material culture of those
who last lived there. The eleven-mile loop road
follows many of the grades and turns of the old
wagon roads, fording a stream now and then.
Along the way you are likely to see wildlife:
deer and wild turkey year-round; lots of
groundhogs in the summer. The cattle grazing
here help to keep the cove from returning to
forest. Please do not climb over fences or leave
gates open. Do not drive on or in the fields.
Remember, it is unlawful to feed wildlife. |

Hiking Trails
Walking and hiking are favorite ways for
many people to see Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. Much of the interest and mood
present in the park depends on finding subtle
variations in nature not seen from automobiles.
For example, wildflowers, cascading streams, the
scent of evergreens, and the sounds of birds are
best seen and experienced away from roads. For
this reason, the National Park Service maintains
800 miles of trails here.

Rivers & Streams
Throughout the Smokies you may be enticed
from your car by the sight, sound, and feel
of clear, cool mountain streams that tumble
downslope as frothy cascades and waterfalls.
Such water is the result of an abundant
annual precipitation that averages about
fifty (50) inches at lower elevations and up
to eighty three (83) inches at Clingmans
Dome. Warm, moist air masses that move
inland from the Gulf of Mexico and the
Atlantic Ocean tend to cool as they rise
over the mountains. This cooling air loses
its ability to retain moisture so the higher
elevations receive an increasing amount of
precipitation.
-
Precipitation in the form of rain either
enters the ground, runs off into
streams, or evaporates. Winter snows
temporarily delay this recycling. Once
the rain or melted snow enters the
ground it begins to slowly percolate
down to the water table.
-
Natural springs occur throughout the
mountains where the water table is close
to the surface. This water and the
run-off of frequent rains results in
streams that flow constantly the year
round.
